Basic Plans now available

Posted by: admin   in Project News

A Basic Sketch of the vision of the forge.I have now updated The Plans page so that Crossroads members and anyone else can see the basic vision for the project.

At the moment it is a basic vision of what I would like to construct, I shall continue to expand this as I find the time to do and scan more drawings, as well as plan area’s with more detail.

Well done Sveinn, I will keep an eye open for gear and when my home forge is sorted out, will consider you for any cast offs. Have you a leg vice?
Looking forward to seeing hot iron over your anvil.

What fuel will be used in the forge, and in each of the two furnaces?

Since pressurized gas is modern and wood is too low-temperature, I’m guessing it’ll be either coal or charcoal. Probably coal, guessing by the list of Related Projects to the right on this page. :-D

Where would the fuel be stored? How much of it would need to be stored at any one time? And in what kind of “container” will it be kept in (and is the container to be acquired or built)?

A combination of wood and coke will be used in the forge… mainly coke once the forge is running at temp. Coke is extremely hard to get burning, and won’t really stay burning unless there is another fuel source keeping it hot enough to drag extra air in. It will be most likely just kept in a bucket or half barrel near the forge. I wouldn’t mind playing with some coal in there as well, however I’m not really a fan of coals smokyness, and I’m not really sure whether there would be a benefit to using coal over coke… Something that we could experiment with I guess, maybe coal will stay burning easier.
